New bridge finally built by Skelton Lake.

April 19, 2017 4:00 PM

Local Lib Dem councillor Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) is celebrating the long awaited delivery of a footbridge over the Aire at Skelton Lake near Woodlesford.

The bridge was promised a decade ago but plans were mired when squabbles with the old Coal Authority surfaced over money.

A few years ago, Sustrans were given the task of constructing the bridge with an accessible path, linking the lake to Rothwell Country Park and the Wykebeck Valley Way. The bridge has now been completed, with only a final section of the path to be finished for it to open to the public.

Cllr Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) commented: "We battled for years to get the funding released from the British Coal Authority to get it built, but now it's here it will make a big difference to groups like Friends of Rothwell Country Park and Rothwell Footpath Group, who want to get more people out enjoying the local environment.

Sustrans have done a fantastic job and I look forward to the full path opening in the near future."
