After years as a local eyesore, demolition has started and work should be finished on the new green area by the summer.

Cllr Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) commented: "The garages have remained largely unused for some time now and the area has turned increasingly derelict, becoming a magnet for graffiti and fly-tipping.

"There were reports of asbestos in the garage roofs and residents had asked me time and again if the council could do something to sort it out, concerned for the children playing in the area.

"I'm pleased that we have been able to secure not only the demolition, but also the landscaping required to turn this into an asset for local residents.

"It's a big improvement and now local kids have somewhere safe to play."
