Council charges for Christmas carnival road closures

November 18, 2016 7:32 PM

Councillor Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) has stepped in to ensure that council red tape does not put the stoppers on Rothwell's Christmas Carnival.

Rothwell Carnival Committee faced a bill from the council of £458 to close the road to allow the Christmas open market on Commercial Street.

Cllr Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) said:

"The Christmas carnival is one of the highlights of our year in Rothwell, and really kicks off the Christmas season in style.

"The carnival committee all sacrifice a huge amount of time and effort through the year to make sure that it is a wonderful experience for all who attend.

"So, I was saddened when I found out that the council charged the group for something as simple as closing the roads, which can't be more than some diversion signs and bollards.

"The carnival committee raise a lot of money to put on a decent show for the families that attend and I didn't want to see them stung by council bureaucracy, so I covered it out of local funds."
