Memorial service for well respected and valued former local Councillor

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 30th Sep 2009

A memorial service will be held on Saturday 10th October at St Agnes Church on Stoney Rock Lane in Burmantofts for former Burmantofts and Richmond Hill Councillor Margaret (Maggie) Grace Clay CBE, who died earlier this year.

Cllr Richard Brett, Leader of Leeds City Council, said "Maggie Clay was a close personal friend of both myself and my wife, as well as a political colleague who inspired me when I came into politics. Her tragic death in April at the age of 62 was a shock to all who knew her, both here in Leeds and in Stockport where she had moved. Maggie was elected to both Leeds City Council and the old West Yorkshire County Council at the end of the 1970's and served the area until 1988. She was awarded the CBE at this time for her work both as a local Councillor and as the Secretary of the national Association of Liberal Councillors.

"She was known to many people across Leeds and we thought it was both right and proper that she should be remembered with a memorial service in the area she represented."
