Memorial Service in Leeds for former Councillor Margaret Clay

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 3rd Jul 2009

Following the death of former Leeds Councillor Margaret Clay on 2nd April this year it has been announced that a memorial service will be held in Leeds. It will take place at 3pm on Saturday 10th October at St Agnes Church, Stoney Rock Lane, in Burmantofts, in the area she used to represent on Leeds City Council.

The date was announced after a memorial service held in Stockport Town Hall where Leader of Leeds City Council Cllr Richard Brett spoke about the role Maggie played in his political life and as a personal friend.

Cllr Brett said: "We had an extremely good turnout of over 300 people, all the great and the good appeared, including five MPs. Of five tributes I was the last to speak which was quite a daunting task.

"Maggie was my political mentor and a great friend. If we had never met I would not be Leader of Leeds City Council today. I am glad we have been able to organise a memorial service in Leeds. It will be a fitting tribute to the many years of hard work she put in for the people of Burmantofts and East Leeds, as well as a time for those who knew her as a friend to remember her."
