12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 16th Apr 2009

The Leeds Folk Dance club is going from strength to strength thanks to a donation by councillors in Moortown.

The councillors have given £225 pounds which has paid for a new radio mic and contributed towards the hire of the Meanwood Methodist Church where the group meets every Wednesday evening.

The group has 40 members, a mixture of men and women aged 40-95 but the group has recently gained some younger members, the youngest are twins aged 13.

Derry Fletcher the groups treasurer said:

"The extra money will go a long way for us. We have already paid for a new radio mic which means we can now direct the group and take part in the dancing at the same time. We have great fun, it's great exercise and we provide a service to the community."

Cllr Brenda Lancaster ( Lib Dem, Moortown) said:

"This is a wonderful group who play a valuable role in our community. I am glad that the money my fellow ward councillors and I have contributed has gone towards such useful equipment."
