Northern Way key to combating recession

Leeds City Council Joint Leader meets with other Northern leaders to discuss the way forward.

Cllr Richard Brett, Lib Dem Group Leader and Joint Leader of Leeds City Council is attending a key meeting of regional council leaders from across the North of England in Durham today (20th March). He will discuss with fellow leaders how the North of England can ensure national policy in combating the credit crunch and job losses reflects the whole of the UK and not just the priorities of London and South East England. Amongst other issues they will also be discussing how the energy needs of the region can best be met, both to ensure security of supply and reducing the carbon footprint.

Cllr Brett said:

"Together the Northern Way represents a substantial proportion of the UK's economy. In terms of energy usage we are responsible for over a quarter and we also generate a similar amount. We need to ensure that we reduce the region's footprint by encouraging renewable technologies, alongside energy efficiency.

"By using the skills we have in this field throughout the North of England we can also generate jobs and economic activity at the same time, vital benefits for our region in today's economic crisis. Together as the Northern Way our voice is louder and we can make our point of view more effectively with Government to ensure local people's needs are met."
