Former Horsforth library to be renewed

12.00.00am GMT Wed 5th Nov 2008

Leeds City Council's Executive Board today voted to invest nearly £900k in the former Horsforth Library building and turn it into a joint Youth Services and Area Management facility.

The Stanhope Drive Community Centre, which is currently home to Youth Services, is nearing the end of its useful life and only provides a restricted locality service.

The proposal to refurbish the ground floor of the Horsforth library will replace this out-dated facility and provide a youth centre that is accessible to all the young people of Horsforth.

Before the layout and design of the facility are finalised, plans will go out to consultation with both Youth Services and local youngsters.

Horsforth ward councillors actively encourage residents to have their say in the redevelopment of the building.

Cllr Brian Cleasby (Lib Dem, Horsforth) commented:

"The residents of Horsforth, and in particular young people, should have a say in the future of their services and the former library. I would strongly urge people to contact us and tell us what they want to see. The overwhelming impression we have got from young people to date is that they want a town centre facility that offers more dynamic services. The Stanhope Drive Centre was much loved but unfortunately time has taken its toll and it is no longer fit for purpose."

Cllr Andrew Barker (Lib Dem, Horsforth) added:

"I really welcome this investment in Horsforth. The new centre, located as it is right next to the new library, the Mechanics Institute and the health centre will help create a real sense of a community hub on Town Street. We will also be able to forge links between Youth Services and the new library, making use of the computer suite and encouraging learning and training."
