Station plans "on the right track"

3.40.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 6th Aug 2008

Horsforth councillors today gave tentative support for two new stations to be built in the region, but urge developers to ensure the area benefits from additional public transport links.

The new stations at Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge will be built on the Airedale and Wharfedale lines between Leeds and Shipley.

Cllr Brian Cleasby (Lib Dem, Horsforth) stated:

"The construction of two new stations will doubtless encourage commuters from Horsforth and the towns and villages surrounding Apperley Bridge and the Kirkstall Valley. Developers must therefore ensure that the sites interface fully with local bus services and offer suitable pedestrian access, bicycle stores, etc, to encourage people to leave their cars at home."

Cllr Chris Townsley (Lib Dem, Horsforth) commented:

"I welcome the new stations on this line and their intended role in the reduction of congestion and carbon emissions in the area. However, public transport links with outlying communities, especially in the vicinity of Kirkstall Forge, must be strengthened as part of the development to avoid placing additional strain on the already congested A65. Every encouragement must be given for the residents of Horsforth and Bramley to travel to the site on foot, bike or bus".
