Liberal Democrat Group on Leeds City Council

Statement on Labour councillor's defection

12.00.00am GMT Thu 6th Mar 2008

Liberal Democrat group leader, Cllr Richard Brett (Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) has issued the following statement on the defection of Hyde Park and Woodhouse councillor Kabeer Hussain from Labour to independent.

"Cllr Hussain's decision is clearly a matter for him and him alone. What is clear is that, like many people in Hyde Park and Woodhouse and the city of Leeds in general, Cllr Hussain does not see the opposition providing a viable way ahead.

"When the previous administration were in power in Hyde Park and Woodhouse, local schools were closed down and the area neglected. Nobody in the area wants a return to those bad old days."
