12k for East Leeds allotment revamp12.00.00am GMT Wed 7th Mar 2007 Leeds City Council is investing over £12k in a revamp of the Osmondthorpe allotments in East Leeds. The money is being spent on an intensive clean-up operation and a 1.8m-high palisade fence to improve security. Whilst welcoming the investment, local councillor Richard Brett talked about the benefits of owning an allotment. Councillor Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) said, "The new fence will provide improved security and the clean-up will give the allotments a timely face-lift. Hopefully the project will not only make the allotments a more appealing prospect for the people who already have a patch, but also for those people thinking of getting one. "An allotment gives people the chance to relax in their own space, a rare commodity in this day and age. A bit of greenery they can call their own. Whether for purely recreational purposes or for the serious business of growing veg, allotments are a terrific asset for the community.
