St Chad's War Memorial theft weeks before Armistice Day

4.27.00pm GMT Thu 2nd Nov 2006

Over the last two weeks York stone flags have been stolen from St Chad's War Memorial on Otley Road, Weetwood. The thefts have left those members of the public wishing to pay their respects on Armistice Day facing the prospect of standing on muddy ground. The Cemeteries Department responsible for maintaining this site has agreed to ensure that paving will be replaced in time for Remembrance Sunday on November 12th.

Councillor Sue Bentley (Lib Dem, Weetwood) said, "It is a despicable act and I hope that the thieves are thoroughly ashamed of themselves. I can't believe that people are so selfish and heartless, especially at this time of the year so close to Armistice Day. This is when we pay our respects to the thousands of men and women who gave their lives for our country and for future generations to live in peace."

Councillor Bentley added, "In the last two years there has been a spate of York flag stone thefts from gardens. Residents should report any suspicious movements to the police by calling Weetwood Police Station on 0854 606 0606."
