Local Councillors welcome Yeadon Banks hearing

12.20.07am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 19th Oct 2006

Yeadon Councillors Colin Campbell, Ryk Downes and Graham Kirkland have welcomed a major development on the future of Yeadon Banks. Part-owned by Leeds City Council, Yeadon Banks acts as a valuable community space for local people. An application to have the land designated a village green has been submitted by Yeadon residents in an attempt to safeguard the future of the banks against developers. The application has however, faced opposition.

In an effort to get the application moving again, the council's Plans Panel has called for a public enquiry to gather evidence to help them reach a final decision. Councillor Colin Campbell has welcomed the public hearing organised for early November.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said, "The hearing presents a perfect opportunity for those residents who have put themselves forward to speak to have their say and help shape the future of their local community. The Yeadon Banks issue has rumbled on for some time now and needs resolving once and for all. I'm pleased that this application is at last moving towards a conclusion."

Councillor Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) added, "Yeadon Banks provides a vital recreational space for children and adults alike, whether that is for playing football or walking the dog. Both my ward colleagues and I hope that the Plans Panel give the thumbs up to the application and designate Yeadon Banks a village green."

The public hearing will take place on Tuesday 7th November 2006 and will commence at 10am in Yeadon Methodist Church, Chapel Hill, Yeadon.
