Lib Dems Show BNP the Exit Door!

5.02.24pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 17th Oct 2003

Councillor Mark Harris, Leader of the Opposition Liberal Democrat Group on Leeds City Council, has today written to Cllr Jennifer Pearson congratulating her on her magnificent victory against the BNP in yesterday's by-election in Mixenden Ward, Halifax.

Cllr Harris said "This win by Jennifer and the Lib Dem Team in Mixenden Ward of Calderdale MBC over the BNP shows that their obnoxious policies are being soundly rejected, after the Lib Dems picked up the gauntlet. In a Ward where the BNP won a by-election earlier this year they lost by over 400, gaining only just over 30% of the vote compared to 48% for the Lib Dems. Labour came a poor third while the Conservatives failed to put up a candidate. Coming side by side with a Lib Dem gain from the BNP only a few miles further away across the Pennines in Burnley, it shows that the Lib Dems are continuing to gain in real elections, as well as in the opinion polls.

In both Burnley & Halifax local people have clearly seen through the mask of the BNP and want nothing to do with their policies of deception and hatred. Nobody else should be in any doubt about what the BNP represents and why they need to be fought tooth and nail.
