Lib Dems Welcome Road Safety Measures in Harehills12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 14th Oct 2003 Road safety improvements at Bankside Primary School are great news for local children - now drivers have to play their part…. Councillors Andrew Tear and Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Harehills), are pleased to see that the Council are at last spending £8.5K to make the area outside Bankside Primary School safer. Cllr Tear said "I'm glad that the Highways Department are taking note of the pleas from local residents and Councillors for safety measures at Bankside Primary. There have been several accidents outside the school in recent years, hopefully the improvements will make the roads around the school safer". Cllr Taylor added "It's good to see that some of the money will be spent on improving pupils' road awareness, which will be of benefit to them all the time, not just when going to school. As well as improving the childrens' road awareness though, it's vital that motorists drive in a responsible manner." Cllr Taylor continued "I can't stress strongly enough the need for motorists to curb their speed while driving near schools. There's no excuse for drivers exceeding the speed limit as the area now falls within a 20mph zone. It's important that this is enforced."
