Headingley Councillors oppose demolition of "historic gem"12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 1st Jul 2003 A proposal has been submitted to demolish "Tudor Cottage" and replace it with two six bedroomed semi detached houses. Planning guidelines state that demolition of properties within a conservation area should be resisted where the property makes a positive contribution to the character or appearance of the area. Replacements must enhance or preserve the character of the area. This proposal fails on both counts. Cllr Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "Tudor Cottage on Orville Gardens is one of the hidden gems in Headingley, and makes a positive contribution to Headingley's architectural heritage. Its demolition would destroy the ambiance of a community situated in the heart of the conservation area. I will be opposing it vigorously." Cllr Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Headingley) adds "The proposed six bedroomed semi detached houses which would replace the cottage are totally out of keeping with nearby dwellings. This application would almost double the number of adult residents on Orville Gardens yet few extra parking spaces are envisaged. The development must be resisted".
