Leeds Lib Dem leader Cllr Stewart Golton has welcomed the Government's decision to award funding for the development of a trolleybus system in the city.
Councillor Golton said:
"Leeds is currently the largest city in Europe without a rapid transit system. We have been awaiting a decision on this scheme for many years and this announcement means that Leeds can now advance its aspirations as a major European city."
"The building and development of the NGT scheme will create thousands of new jobs. Completion of the scheme can only have a positive effect on the local economy and encourage more businesses to thrive in Leeds and boost job opportunities".
"Trolleybuses provide an energy efficient means of travel and we can now begin to develop more sustainable transport links on some of the busiest routes in our city. "
