Older people in Horsforth will get help tackling icy pavements thanks to donations from the area's Liberal Democrat councillors.
Councillors Brian Cleasby and Chris Townsley (Lib Dem, Horsforth) have paid for two new grit bins with £800 from their Members in the Community and Environment (MICE) budgets.
A grit bin will be placed around St James Walk due to concerns regarding the older residents of the St James flats, some of whom have mobility trouble. The use of grit and grit bins will make sure residents are able to leave their homes safely. The second bin will be placed on King George Avenue to again, help residents in icy conditions.
Each area will appoint a 'Grit Bin Champion' who has the initial responsibility of the management and order requests for bin. The Champion will ensure that the grit bins are always full, and must report any other problems.
Cllr. Brian Cleasby (Lib Dem, Horsforth) said:
"Grit bins are a safe, practical and useful way of ensuring that the residents of St James Walk and King George Avenue will not fall victim to harsh and icy weather conditions. We are always open to any suggestions on locations for further grit bins in the Horsforth area"
Cllr Chris Townsley (Lib Dem, Horsforth) said:
"It is our priority to keep the residents of Horsforth safe. The request for grit bins around the area are a great way of meeting people's needs and concerns, and the concept of a 'grit bin champion' gives added incentive for communities to come together and ensure safety of other residents together."
