Arrangements for bin collections over Christmas have gone badly wrong in one Leeds suburb.
Residents in Monk Bridge Road and Victoria Terrace in Weetwood usually have their bins collected on a Monday. This week's collection was moved to Sunday 18th December, but residents have been in touch with Cllr Sue Bentley (Lib Dem, Weetwood) to complain they were never told of the change of date and only realised when their bins weren't collected on Monday.
Cllr Bentley points to the fact that nearly all the households on the streets put their bin out for their regular collection as proof that the council failed to tell local people what was happening.
Residents who contacted the council to complain have been told that their next collection will be Saturday (Christmas Eve) as no collections will take place on Boxing Day either. It appears that the council has no plans to inform residents that this collection will be taking place. Cllr Bentley is concerned that this means most residents will miss two collections in a row at the time of year when more waste is produced than any other.
Cllr Sue Bentley (Lib Dem, Weetwood) said:
"This is a simple case of incompetence from the bin service.
"The bins have to be reorganised over Christmas every year to take account of the public holidays. It should be a routine matter to plan ahead and inform residents well in advance. But we've got hundreds of residents in Weetwood who have no idea that their bin days have been changed.
"Unless the council takes steps now to tell residents what's going on, there's a very good chance that hundreds of residents will be forced to wait three weeks for a collection at the time of year the bins are at their fullest.
"It's yet another bin related shambles from the council. Whoever is responsible ought to apologise for the inconvenience that has been caused to so many of our residents"
