Community spirit was out in force in Headingley last week when long term residents and students in the Ash Gardens and Derwentwater Terrace area embarked on a spree of bulb planting.
Nilesh Chohan of the Ash Road Area Residents Association (ARARA) secured over £200 from 15 local landlords to pay for bulbs and planters. Local students and long term residents then planted the bulbs and placed them in the gardens of 37 properties in the area.
Local businesses including B&Q, Poundstretcher and Milford's Merchants also contributed to the scheme by offering discounts on plants, pots and gravel.
The planting took place between Thursday 24th and Sunday 27th November.
Nilesh Chohan, who has also set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme on the same streets, said:
"Everyone wants to live in an attractive area and I am working with my neighbours to make our streets more pleasant and secure".
Cllr Jamie Matthews (Lib Dem, Headingley) who also assisted with planting the pots said
"The residents deserve a huge amount of credit for this wonderful example of a community coming together to improve their area.
"They've channelled the generosity of local landlords, businesses and residents and done something that will really make a difference to the local environment".
