Pupil Premium will boost Learning for Disadvantaged

July 28, 2010 12:00 AM

Cllr Sue Bentley (Lib Dem, Weetwood), Shadow Spokesperson for Children's Services and Learning, has welcomed the Government announcement that the pupil premium will be introduced from next September (2011).

Cllr Bentley said :- "This week, the Government announced that a Pupil Premium, funded from outside the schools budget, will be introduced next September. It should mean that funds will be provided for local schools to allow children from disadvantaged backgrounds to receive the extra support they deserve, allowing them to have an equal chance for a good education, no matter which school they go to in the city.

"In Leeds we've seen a steady rise in pupil achievement over the last few years, but there has still been a big gap between the highest achieving schools and the lowest. By providing money to follow the pupils who need it the most, the Pupil Premium is a major step forward which I hope will enable even greater improvements in the future."
