The flyover that cuts through Burmantofts and Richmond Hill ward will be under construction for at least the next ten weeks and as of Monday 24th May part of the Ivy Street roundabout will be closed to traffic.
Local councillors Richard Brett and Ralph Pryke are warning that residents who regularly pass through the area may become confused by the changes. The much needed construction to the widely used flyover has been underway since April 24th, but a closure to the southbound part of the York Road roundabout opposite Benfield Ford garage will begin Monday 24th of May.
The construction is expected to be finished by the end of July. Local councillors fear this closure will result in some people having to take long detours or dangerous U-turns at Harehills Lane or Gipton approach junctions. Councillors also fear that signs warning of the work are inadequate and will leave many local residents unaware of the upcoming road closure.
Cllr Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) said:
"I have only just been notified about these planned works which will likely cause confusion not just for my ward but for people all over Leeds who use this stretch of road. I will be pushing for this work to be finished as soon as possible."
Cllr Ralph Pryke (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) added:
"Currently there is a real lack of clear communication from the council as to exactly what the effects of this construction will be for traffic and local residents. Councillor Brett and I are looking into the issue and are actively informing constituents of what this construction means for them."
