Leeds councillor and former foster carer Brenda Lancaster (Lib Dem, Moortown) is calling for more people to consider taking up fostering.
She is supporting this year's foster care fortnight (17-30 May 2010) campaign which is run each year by the Fostering Network. This year the focus is on the personal and professional skills a modern foster carer needs to fulfill their role as a child care expert.
There is currently a shortage of around 10,000 foster carers nationally. This year Leeds City Council is looking find an additional 25 households via its Career Fostering Campaign. These carers would be full time and receive a fee for looking after children and young people mainly of school age up to and including teens.
Cllr Brenda Lancaster (Lib Dem, Moortown) said:
"I was a foster carer for six years and it was the most rewarding thing I have ever done. People say they would never consider doing it, but it's wonderful to offer children a safe and stable environment and watch them grow.
"We currently have a shortage of foster carers in Leeds and people are urgently needed to provide either short or long term support for our young people."
