A city councillor has called for the development of a new, multi faith cemetery on Elmete Lane to begin as soon as possible.
Leeds City Council has been drawing up plans for a new cemetery on Elmete Lane over the past few months.
Following a meeting with community and religious leaders, Cllr Richard Brett, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group of Leeds City Council now believes development should start on the site.
Speaking of the plans Cllr Brett said:
"Elmete Lane would make an ideal location for a new cemetery. It is a well-drained site, with attractive glades and mature trees. The site could be laid out very quickly, with good road access and the potential to expand in the future if necessary.
"I believe a multi faith cemetery on Elmete Lane could have the capacity to become a popular, well used service. Eventually other sites around the city will have to be phased out of use. Elmete should allow us to continue to provide excellent levels of service to all who use our cemeteries."
