Councillors back community education in Leeds

April 7, 2010 12:00 AM

Leeds City Council's Executive Board today decided that the closure of City of Leeds School should be reconsidered pending further consultation.

Cllr Richard Brett, Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Leeds spoke out about the importance of maintaining community education on the City of Leeds High School site. He also praised his colleague Cllr Penny Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) saying "she has worked tirelessly making the case for community education".

The Executive Board have requested that Education Leeds bring back a report in July 2010 further exploring options put forward by the school's governors to retain secondary education on the site.

Cllr Richard Brett, (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) said:

"Staff and governors now have the opportunity to work with Education Leeds and discuss their options. I think what City of Leeds needs is a fresh start. They should look toward setting up a trust school with supporting partners, sponsors and possibly even a new name.

"There needs to be significant changes and improvements in order to strengthen the leadership and the governing body. They now have the opportunity to work with the local community and put together a package which the Executive Board can support."
