Recently approved plans for eight additional Changing Places toilets have been described as "long overdue" by Cllr Richard Brett, Leader of the Lib Dem group on Leeds City Council.
A Changing Places toilet is specially adapted for people with profound disabilities and their carers. They have enough space and the right equipment, including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist.
The first Changing Places toilet in Leeds was opened at the White House Café, Otley Chevin in December 2008. At today's Executive Board meeting the council agreed plans to install eight new toilets, drastically transforming facilities throughout the city.
Speaking after the meeting Cllr Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) said:
"I'm glad that Leeds is finally catching up with our neighbours and installing these toilets that visitors and residents have long called for. We are planning to have at least eleven in use throughout the city by next year.
"There's also a long list of potential sites which we are currently looking into for 2011 and beyond. This is the start of what will be a major transformation of the city's facilities.
"We are also ensuring that the new arena continues to lead the way, with a Changing Places toilet planned for that development too."
