In April 2010 Otley Action for Older People will be running new drop-in sessions at the one stop centre on Boroughgate.
Councillors have given a helping hand towards the project by giving £250 from their members improvement in the community environment (MICE) fund. The money will pay for mobile broadband to give staff internet access so they can provide a better service for elderly people in Otley.
Staff and volunteers will be there to provide a wide range of advice and information, help to solve problems and assist people in any way they can. Local people can just drop-in during one of their sessions or alternatively make an appointment by calling 01943 463965. There will be two sessions a week, Tuesday afternoons 1.30pm - 3.30pm and Friday mornings 10.30am -12.30pm. The first session will take place on Tuesday 6th April.
Cllr Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said:
"When Otley Elderly Action came to us with their idea we thought it was wonderful.
"The groups staff and volunteers are doing a fantastic job and this project will enable them to reach out and help more people in Otley. Mobile broadband means that staff at Elderly Action will have the vast wealth of information on the internet at their fingertips. This will help them provide a better service and solve people's problems quicker."
Cllr Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) added:
"This is exactly what our MICE money is for, a relatively small amount of money can go such and long way and have a big impact on people lives. I know Otley Elderly Action are hoping to expand this service and get some more computers so elderly people can build confidence in using the internet."
