Sport England has raised a statutory objection to building on the tennis courts at the main site of the former Leeds Girls High School. This means that if Leeds City Council were to approve plans to develop the tennis courts the project will automatically be referred on for review by the government. This would further delay any final decision.
In their letter of objection to the Council, Sport England say that they do not accept the school's claim that they have re-provided playing pitches at the Leeds Grammar School site in Alwoodley.
This decision follows a move by the school to withdraw proposals to build on another part of the school playing fields - proposals which were also strongly criticised by local residents. The main site is the subject of a number of planning applications which seek redevelopment for residential use after the girls' school closed down and moved to Alwoodley.
Cllr Hamilton, (Lib Dem Headingley) said:
"Sport England objecting to this scheme means that the school must now fundamentally rethink their proposals. Green space is at a premium in Headingley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse and it should be preserved at all costs."
