Leeds City Council has approved the installation of a new pedestrian crossing at a notorious accident hot spot.
The junction of Woodhouse Lane and Clarendon Road, by The Library pub, is well used by pedestrians walking between Hyde Park, Headingley and the city centre. The route is also popular with students walking to and from university.
However the crossing has been the scene of twelve accidents in the past five years, including, tragically, one death.
Now the council are planning to provide formal pedestrian and cycle facilities.
Yorkstone paving paths will be taken up, cleaned and re-laid and concrete footpaths will be renewed in an effort to make it safer for pedestrians.
It is estimated that the works will total £135,000 and will be completed by the end of March this year.
Councillor Jamie Matthews (Lib Dem, Headingley) a long time campaigner for the scheme said:
"I am really pleased that the council have finally been able to fix this situation. Pedestrians currently take their life in their hands trying to cross at this busy junction.
"The new footpaths, cycleways and crossings will make it much safer for the thousands that walk this way each day.
"This junction has been in need of attention for far too long. I'm calling on council officers to get on with the works as soon as possible."
