Local councillors and residents in Meanwood are up in arms after Yorkshire Bank wrote to it's customers announcing that their branch is to close.
The Meanwood branch of Yorkshire Bank will close at 2:00pm on the 26th January and merge with the Headingley branch.
The decision was taken because they were unable to renew their lease due to the redevelopment of the site. Councillors say that Yorkshire Bank have made no attempt to find a new site in the area. Closure will mean that there will be no ATM machines in the area.
The nearest branch will now be in Headingley where car parking is limited and where there is no bus stop outside the branch.
Cllr Brenda Lancaster (Lib Dem, Moortown) said:
"I could not believe it when I received the letter. This is going to have a devastating impact on local people, especially the elderly in the area. People still like that face-to-face contact and feel safer dealing with an real person especially when it comes to their money. Many elderly residents have been customers since childhood depositing a penny a week from when they were at school."
Cllr Richard Harker (Lib Dem, Moortown) added:
"Communities are being destroyed by closures of banks, post offices and dentists. We need to find a way to safeguard space for local facilities and keep greedy developers from sucking the life out of our neighbourhoods."
