Councillors help to tackle crime in North West Leeds

September 29, 2009 12:00 AM

A number of crime prevention projects were given £30,000 extra funding from the councils Outer North West Area Committee.

Measures to tackle anti-social behaviour, under age drinking, vehicle crime and speeding have been given the go-ahead with fresh funds to support the projects over the next year.

These include the 'capture cars' initiative, where vehicles are equipped with desirable items which include tracking devices, cameras and smart water technology to catch thieves.

Money will be used to purchase speed indicator devices which will be deployed twice a week in each ward. They will be used in streets identified by members of the public through police pact and neighbourhood watch meetings and ward forums where speeding has been raised as a concern amongst local residents.

Police off-road Motorcycles are also being deployed to patrol green space in the North West Area. The bikes will be used to tackle anti-social behaviour and drug dealing or to search for suspects in an open expanse such as Otley Chevin.

An alcohol test purchasing scheme is also being funded to tackle the problem of off licences selling alcohol to children. Funding will be used on an intelligence led basis to direct additional resources to hotspot areas whilst conducting further test purchase operations. The funding will also be used to support an education programme for young people.

Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said

"We are working hard with local police to help create a safer community. We want to eliminate all crime and the funding of these projects will enhance police provision in our area giving us dedicated services for North West Leeds.

"Everyone can do their bit, it's about being vigilant and using common sense. The police and local councillors are here to listen and give advice. I hope residents will continue to come to local meetings and share their thoughts about how we can make the most of these projects."
