A Leeds councillor has expressed his deep concerns about a planned city centre march on October 31st by the English Defence League.
Cllr Kabeer Hussain (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) has written to the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police and joint Leaders of Leeds City Council in an attempt to stop the march.
Cllr Kabeer Hussain said:
"I understand that freedom of speech is important. But when it incites racial hatred, brings about trouble, mayhem and threats (as we saw recently in Birmingham) it has the power to divide communities and undo all of the hard work Leeds City Council has done.
"Because of this I believe we should use all available resources to stop this march.
"If we are unsuccessful and the march goes ahead I would like to call on local communities to remain calm and carry on with their normal day-to-day business to ensure they are not caught up in this."
