A new school is to be created in East Leeds by merging Mount St Mary's Catholic primary school with Richmond Hill primary school.
Richmond Hill primary school is to be expanded with new buildings to include specialist provision for children with special educational needs and space for community use. All these changes are expected to be completed in 2012. Mount St Mary's will close in August 2010.
Cllr David Hollingworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) said:
"This is a fantastic step forward for our community. Mount St Mary's, despite being an extremely successful school, has been stuck in sub standard buildings for a long time.
"Bringing the two schools together will mean new state-of-the-art facilities and buildings which the wider community can benefit from. I believe this new school will better suit the needs of our neighbourhood ."
