Leeds City Council has unanimously granted approval to re-develop the Leeds Shopping Plaza into Trinity West, Albion Street.
Members of the city centre plans panel have been working with developers Trinity Quarter Developments Ltd for eighteen months and the project was finally given the stamp of approval today.
The re-development will include, increasing retail floorspace, giving the outside of the building a face -lift, demolishing the escalators and bridge and relocating the main entrance to the shopping centre. The bridge just north of this will be completely rebuilt and transformed into what will resemble a floating glass block with opaque glazing. The new structure will be light, bright and open up the space.
Chair of the city centre plans panel Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said:
"It is so important in the current economic climate that a development of this nature gets approved.
"The shopping plaza is an important key location within the city centre, at present the building doesn't do itself justice. I think these works will change the area into a place where you will want to visit. I would like to thank the officers and developers involved in this project for their hard work and vision."
Cllr Jamie Matthews, plans panel member (Lib Dem, Headingley) added:
"The changes will dramatically improve the look and feel of this part of the city, the area is currently a mish-mash of styles . Opening up the space and giving the area uniformity will be a step forward for the city and tie in with the future Trinity East development."
