North West Leeds is looking a lot brighter thanks to the appointment of a new Senior Environmental Action Officer.
The new officer, Mark Freer, began work last week and is patrolling the streets in a bid to clean up Headingley, Hyde Park, Woodhouse and Burley in Leeds. His responsibility is to crack down on environmental offences such as littering, fly-tipping and unauthorised flyering.
The area's new 'Grime and Punishment' van will also act as a visual presence in the area and is designed to deter people from committing environmental crimes. Councillors in North West Leeds have funded this through their local area committee to the tune of £38,000.
Cllr James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley), Executive Member for Environment said:
"Headingley and Hyde Park suffer a disproportionate share of environmental problems so I am delighted that Mark is now at work tackling the issues in these areas.
"Together with the grime and punishment van, Mark is a highly visible deterrent in the area. He also plays a very important role in educating and raising awareness of the issues surrounding environmental crime. I look forward to working with him in the future."
