Leeds Lib Dem councillors have welcomed a decision to approve plans for a wind turbine in East Leeds.
The turbine will be built at the sewage treatment works in Knostrop. It will be 125m high and will have the capacity to generate 2.5MW of electricity at peak load.
Leeds City Council's East Area Planning Committee approved the application from Yorkshire Water at its meeting yesterday (4th June) at the Civic Hall.
Cllr Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill), Leader of Leeds City Council welcomed the decision :
"I am delighted that councillors have decided to approve this wind turbine. The sewage treatment works is a major site in the Cross Green area so it is fantastic news that it will be running off green energy in the future."
Cllr James Monaghan, (Lib Dem, Headingley), Executive Member responsible for tackling climate change added:
"It is vitally important that we do as much as we can to increase renewable energy in Leeds. The turbine at Knostrop will make a small but valuable contribution to reducing the city's reliance on fossil fuels and I look forward to seeing more schemes like it in the future."
