Local councillors in Rothwell have reacted in anger at news that Arriva are cutting bus services to the area by a quarter.
Arriva have announced that the 443 and 444 services, which run from Leeds to Wakefield via Rothwell, will only run three buses per hour, as opposed to the four that run at present.
Cllr Stewart Golton (Liberal Democrat, Rothwell) has written to Arriva's chief executive requesting an explanation for the sudden service changes.
Expressing anger and disappointment at the decision, Cllr Golton said:
"This is a cynical decision that has been announced out of the blue, with no explanation, nor any consultation with bus users.
"A lot of local elderly people and those without access to cars rely on these services to get about. By slashing these services Arriva are letting down vulnerable people in a quite cavalier manner.
"Arriva ought to remember that public transport is supposed to be run for the benefit of the public, not their shareholders.
"At a time that we are trying to encourage people out of their cars and onto public transport to tackle congestion and climate change, this decision just does not make sense."
