A parliamentary committee has echoed Liberal Democrat ambitions to return greater powers to local authorities.
The Central and Local Government Select Committee has called for reform of the archaic funding methods governing local authorities.
It says councils should have the ability to raise more funds locally, in return for a reduction in central taxation. It is also suggested that business rates, set by the government currently, should return to local control.
Speaking on the announcement, Cllr Richard Brett (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill), responsible for council finance said:
"These recommendations are just what the Lib Dems have been suggesting for years. Returning these powers and responsibilities to local control will help re-engage the public with politics.
"We have seen tremendous progress in Leeds over previous years. Were business rates returned to Leeds we could drive forward further growth and regeneration."
