Leeds' Liberal Democrat Leader Richard Brett is pledging his support to the "Let Them Work" campaign to give asylum seekers the right to work in the UK.
Since 2002 asylum seekers have since 2002 been banned from working in this country. The campaign calls for the government to allow asylum seekers to work if they have been waiting longer than six months for a full resolution on their asylum application.
Councillor Brett said:
"I believe that asylum seekers should get all the help and support possible to work whist in this country. We are currently denying people who want and are able to work the opportunity to do so. This does not make sense in the current economic climate. By doing this we are isolating asylum seekers from our society, forcing them to rely on handouts and wasting public money.
"The majority want to go out and support their families and the government is currently stopping them. I am in full support of the campaign and will be signing the pledge."
