Children at four Leeds primary schools will be safer thanks to plans for a new 20mph zone in the St Wilfrid's area of Harehills.
This part of the city has been declared the highest priority for a 20mph zone by Leeds City Council due to a large number of accidents that have occurred in recent years involving pedestrians and children.
The new zone is bordered by Woodlands, Oakwood and Hovingham primary schools with St Augustine's at its centre.
As well as the lower speed limit existing traffic calming measures such as speed cushions and raised junctions will be improved and spread throughout the area. Five pedestrian crossings are also planned although these as still subject to approval.
Councillor Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Gipton and Harehills) said:
"I have been anxious to see traffic measures in this part of my ward for some time. This is one of the most densely populated areas in Europe and contains four primary schools. I hope that the zone and the pedestrian crossings will be put in place as soon as possible."
