Representatives of Leeds Veterans organisations have agreed that Leeds Town Hall will hold the first Armed Forces Day celebrations on Saturday 27th June.
Leeds has been granted £6,000 from the Ministry of Defence to run the event. It was decided that the Town Hall would be the best location, a service will be held at the Parish Church at 11am and people will be able to move on to the venue afterwards.
The indoor event means bad weather will not spoil the festivities and rooms such as the Crypt can be used for exhibitions and stalls. A special working group has been set up to iron out the details. It is hoped that local schools will get involved in activities leading up the event. Also that the day can be linked in with the Breeze International Youth Festival which is on the same weekend as Armed Forces Day.
Cllr Brenda Lancaster (Lib Dem, Moortown) said:
"We are hoping to get young and old people working together on the day to raise awareness about Armed Forces Day.
"We are delighted a venue has been finalised. I hope everyone will come together on the day to celebrate our servicemen and women. "
