Last Saturday Leeds North West residents came together on Woodhouse Moor in an event designed to strengthen community cohesion in the area.
The event called Parklife has been hailed a success, people of all ages, students and long term residents alike enjoying their weekend in Hyde Park. Residents enjoyed live music, stand-up comedy and storytelling in the park, as well as taking part in arts, crafts and trying their hand at juggling.
Three local councillors gave £1,050 to support the day and it is hoped that Parklife will be an annual event. Councillors have also committed £6,000 towards Unity Day which is to be held on Woodhouse Moor in September.
The organisers said:
"Our main goals are to unite the communities of inner North-West Leeds towards retaining the 'Leeds Girls School Hockey Field' for public use and also to strengthen the sense of community cohesion. These include religious groups, locally concerned charities, student societies, local businesses and residential organisations."
Cllr James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) said:
"It was such a unique event, every age group was catered for. A lot of time, thought and effort has gone into the planning of this. The organisers should be proud of their achievement.
"There has been a lot of negativity in the media about Woodhouse Moor but this is a prime example of how we can positively use the moor to bring all members of our community together."
