Leeds City Council has announced proposals to build a pedestrian crossing on a busy road in Woodhouse.
A report from the council recommends in principle that a pelican crossing is built on Woodhouse Street, near the junction with Cliff Road. A large number of children cross the road at this location because of its proximity to City of Leeds School.
The scheme will now be subject to further studies on design and cost issues before formal plans are drawn up.
Cllr Penny Ewens (Lib Dem, Hyde Park and Woodhouse) welcomed the news:
"This stretch of road has long been of concern to local residents. It gets very busy and a lot of children use the road which makes the risk of an accident quite high.
"I am pleased the council has recognised these concerns. It is an important first step to getting a crossing built.
"It is now essential that detailed plans are drawn up as soon as possible so we can get it built before an accident occurs."
