The popular arts and community centre in West Park is to remain open. The Weetwood councillors welcomed the decision following a meeting in their ward last week.
The centre is used by over 30 community groups and has more that 2,000 people visiting every week. West Park is not being sold off but will in fact continue to have support from the council to improve its future use. The fields surrounding the site will also remain unsold therefore protecting the areas greenspace.
Local residents and users of the centre were invited to a special meeting on Monday 23rd at Abbey Grange High School. Joint Leader of the council Richard Brett said categorically that the centre and its surrounding land would not be sold off.
The centre is currently the home of the Northern Ballet Theatre who along with a number of other music and dance groups use the centre for rehearsals. It was feared the centre would close when the theatre completed its move to a new building due for completion in 2010.
Councillor Ben Chastney said:
"We are delighted to announce the centre is to stay open, this is great news for our community. The centre is a great local resource used by a variety of different groups. We look forward to working with these community groups and local residents at this site for many years to come."
