Older people in Rothwell are to get extra opportunities to keep healthy and socially active thanks to a donation from a local councillor.
The Rothwell and District Live at Home Scheme provides valuable services to 349 people aged 60 and over and works to promote their independence and well-being enabling them to continue to live in their own homes. The scheme is rapidly expanding and currently has 39 dedicated volunteers trying to cope with the demand.
Cllr Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) has donated £250 from his MICE money (Members Improvement in the Community Environment) funding towards the cost of running their activities and providing transport.
The scheme helps to prevent older people from being socially isolated by providing a number of activities including line dancing Mondays, exercise classes, lunch clubs, a walking group, day trips, a large print library and a signposting and information service.
Cllr Golton said:
"I wholeheartedly support the work of this scheme and pay tribute to the staff and volunteers who provide people in the area with a chance to socialise, stay fit and healthy and continue to live in their own homes. It is crucial that schemes like this are supported and that people are aware that they exist and have access to this valuable community resource.
"In the current financial climate it is vital that we do not allow these schemes to suffer. I would therefore encourage the people of Rothwell to support this project in anyway they can."
