Councillor David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) is hoping that the newly opened East Leeds Link Road will provide a welcome employment boost to his ward.
Labour market statistics show that Burmantofts and Richmond Hill has the highest number of unemployment benefit claimants in the city and the number is on the increase.
However, Councillor Hollingsworth is hoping that improved road links to the rest of Leeds will encourage employers to move into his ward.
Councillor Hollingsworth said:
"Burmantofts and Richmond Hill has for a long time struggled with worryingly high levels of unemployment. I am hopeful that the opening of the East Leeds Link Road will mark a turnaround in the fortunes of the area.
"The current economic downturn and the uncertainty it brings makes this an even more important boost to the ward.
"Improved transport links are a crucial part of regeneration and the new road makes a big difference to the accessibility of the area. I am optimistic that employers will take advantage of this and start moving into Burmantofts and Richmond Hill."
