This afternoon's meeting of Leeds City Council's Executive Board approved an investment of an extra £2.368 million to purchase 20 houses to help meet demand in the east Leeds area. The homes, a mixture of 2 and 3 bedroom properties, have been built as part of the EASEL scheme and are located at two sites, the Oaktree's in Gipton and South Parkway in Seacroft.
Cllr Rev'd Alan Taylor (Lib Dem, Gipton and Harehills) said: "I very much welcome this move by the Council. The EASEL project is essential to improve local communities in Gipton. This investment will not only make additional homes available to local people but will safeguard jobs as well and allow work to continue building homes as part of the EASEL project. With house sales proving increasingly difficult in these hard times the Council is to be congratulated on stepping in to ensure the scheme continues on track."
Cllr David Hollingsworth (Lib Dem, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) is a Board Member of East North East Homes, the Council's Management Organisation for Housing in the area. Speaking after the decision he added: "As a local Councillor involved in helping to provide homes in East Leeds I know full well the pressure that a massive waiting list puts upon homes in the area. These extra homes will allow for more people to be housed, and are a useful boost while we wait for the Government to make up its mind on whether to allow local authorities to raise the money to provide more social housing,"
