Last night some 75 local residents attended a public meeting called by local ward Councillors in Moortown to discuss the latest planning application submitted to build on the former Yorkshire Bank Sports Ground at Allerton Grove. The plan calls for the building of "88 dwellings" along with a new access road.
Cllr Brenda Lancaster (Lib Dem, Moortown), who arranged the meeting, said "This meeting confirmed our view that local residents are totally opposed to the loss of this vital green space in Moortown. We believe this is not a suitable location for 88 new homes and the additional traffic congestion this would cause. The fact that seventy five people turned out on a cold January evening to express their opposition shows how strong local views are".
Cllr Richard Harker (Lib Dem, Moortown), added "Both as a local Councillor for Moortown and the Executive Member with responsibility for Learning I know how vital it is that we keep our green spaces and sports facilities, both for the general benefit of the local community, and to provide room for young people to exercise and take part in sport. Without sports fields and green space we will face an even harder fight in our efforts to help young people maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle".
Cllr Brenda Lancaster added :- "We will continue to oppose this application, but the local community needs to continue to express its opposition directly to planners. By working together local residents, local councillors and local community groups such as the newly formed Moortown Community Group can have far more effect than they would have working separately. That's why we are glad to see the creation of active local community groups, both in Moortown and across the City. They have a vital role to play".
