Liberal Democrat councillors have called for the government to make sure that any new high speed rail link runs through Leeds.
Today (Thursday 15th January), Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon announced that a new High Speed 2 company will be set up to consider the case for a high speed line between London, the North of England, Scotland and the West Midlands.
Joint Leader of Leeds City Council and leader of the Liberal Democrat Group Cllr Richard Brett (Burmantofts and Richmond Hill) said:
"A high speed rail link to Leeds will bring huge economic benefits to our city and the wider region. Better public transport across the board is desperately needed in Leeds and high speed rail has an important part to play.
Ryk Downes (Liberal Democrat, Otley and Yeadon), vice chair of Metro said:
"If a high speed rail link to the North is to be built, it simply has to run through Leeds for us to retain our competitiveness with other UK and European cities. I am glad that the government is showing signs that it is open to such a proposal."
