Wheels in motion to ease Headingley parking woes

October 30, 2008 12:00 AM

Local Liberal Democrat councillors welcome parking review

As any visitor to Headingley will know, parking is a serious concern. The centre is often deemed to be one of the worst in Leeds and accidents are occurring more frequently as a result of increased car use and dangerous parking in the centre.

Wheels are, however, in motion. As part of the Town & District Centres Parking Strategy, Leeds City Council is examining parking provision in central Headingley to see what measures can be taken to improve the situation.

Surveys have been carried out to see how many parking spaces are available around retail and residential areas as well as near to schools and visitor attractions and a series of interviews will be carried out with pedestrians in Headingley town centre. These will find out useful information about travel patterns and parking habits. The information will then be used to better model future parking and pedestrian provision. Councillors hope that radical improvements will be identified to ease parking problems in the area and support local shops.

The interview surveys will be conducted in Headingley between Monday 10th November and Saturday 15th November. Pedestrians will be approached in the main shopping areas of the town centre.

Cllr James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) commented:

"The surveys are an excellent way of collecting data and collating public opinion and will be followed by a full consultation process in the new year. I am really pleased that the parking problems in Headingley are being addressed and I welcome the opportunity for people within the community to have their say. The residents and workers of Headingley have very valuable contributions to make to this process".

Cllr Jamie Matthews (Lib Dem, Headingley) added:

"The parking issue in Headingley is getting worse. People are parking on corners and the roads are really congested. It is an accident waiting to happen. I have high hopes for the review and look forward to seeing the results".
